SPORTS

The Chicago Cubs recently acquired Japanese star hitter and right-fielder Kosuke Fukudome for a four-year, $48 million contract. The 30-year-old, who has been a batting champ twice in Japan, will be the first Japanese player for the Cubs. Meanwhile, the Kansas City Royals signed relief pitcher Yasuhiko Yabuta, who previously played for Chiba Lotte, to a two-year contract.
